Maria Abe
Choreographer and director
Japan
In 2025, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting the French Embassy in Japan Award - Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels for young choreographers, presented at the Yokohama Dance Collection festival. The 2025 laureate is Maria Abe.
Maria Abe is an artist based in Tokyo. Her work focuses on moments in which the body responds to place, language and presence, exploring how the human body continually transforms in relation to its environment.
Her practice spans a range of fields: choreography, direction, project development and audiovisual production, including site-specific video works for theaters and spaces.
Characterized by an androgynous physicality, long limbs and tactile gestures, her movement oscillates between restrained calm and effusive motion, aimed at creating a state of fluctuation at the border between existence and perception.
Alongside her choreographic work, she has appeared as a dancer on Kenshi Yonezu's live tour, in the Toho stage production of Spirited Away and in Syn, an immersive performance-installation by Rhizomatiks × ELEVENPLAY. In recent years, she has also worked as a model at Berlin Fashion Week, expanding the possibilities of bodily expression through fashion and audiovisual media.
Abe holds a degree in dance from Japan Women's College of Physical Education and a master's degree in film and visual arts from Tokyo University of the Arts. Looking ahead, she hopes to further develop her creative practice in both Japan and Europe.
