Robert Wilson

Born in Waco, Texas, Wilson was among the world’s foremost theatre and visual artists. His works for the stage unconventionally fused a wide variety of artistic media—dance, movement, light, sculpture, music and text—into productions renowned for their striking imagery and emotional resonance. Celebrated for redefining the language of performance, he earned the admiration of audiences and critics worldwide.

After studying at the University of Texas and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Wilson founded the New York–based performance collective The Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds in the mid-1960s. There he developed his first landmark works, including Deafman Glance (1970) and A Letter for Queen Victoria (1974). In collaboration with composer Philip Glass, he created the seminal opera Einstein on the Beach (1976), a defining achievement of contemporary music theatre.

Over the course of his career, Wilson collaborated with leading writers and musicians such as Heiner Müller, Tom Waits, Susan Sontag, Laurie Anderson, William S. Burroughs, Lou Reed, Jessye Norman and Anna Calvi. He also brought his distinctive vision to masterworks such as Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape, Brecht and Weill’s The Threepenny Opera, Debussy’s Pelléas and Mélisande, Goethe’s Faust, Homer’s Odyssey, La Fontaine’s Fables, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Verdi’s La Traviata, Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde and several plays by Shakespeare.

Wilson’s drawings, paintings and sculptures were exhibited internationally in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions, and his works are held in major museum and private collections worldwide. His many honours include a Pulitzer Prize nomination, two Premio Ubu awards, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale and an Olivier Award. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the German Academy of the Arts, received eight honorary doctorates and was named Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Officier de la Légion d’Honneur in France, as well as bearer of the German Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit. In 2023, he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale.

Wilson was the founder and Artistic Director of The Watermill Center, an interdisciplinary laboratory for the arts in Water Mill, New York. He passed away on 31 July 2025.
