Behind the Craft with Boris Charmatz
Boris Charmatz, the new leader of Tanztheater Wuppertal, Pina Bausch’s long-time company, has amassed significant directing experience alongside his career as a choreographer and dancer. In Rennes, between 2009 and 2018, he transformed the local National Choreographic Center into an experimental “dance museum,” before launching his own structure, [terrain], in the Hauts-de-France region.
As his first season in Wuppertal draws to a close, he will appear at the Montpellier Danse festival this summer with 10,000 Gestures and À bras-le-corps, as well as Bausch’s Palermo Palermo, performed by the Tanztheater. Charmatz is then slated to create his first work for the company in September. As part of CN D Magazine’s “Behind the Craft” series, he talks about the process that led to his appointment, his first dance with the complex history of Bausch’s former home, and how his work may yet evolve in response.
