MARCO DA SILVA FERREIRA

In 2024, Dance Reflections by
Van Cleef & Arpels presents C A R C A Ç A by Marco da Silva Ferreira as part of its festival in Japan.
In C A R C A Ç A, a diverse cast of ten dancers, including Marco da Silva Ferreira and two musicians, form a non-conformist and joyful corps de ballet. They perform complex footwork that brings together standardized folk dances with contemporary urban styles that emerged in cultures considered as minorities in the past. In this choreography, Marco da Silva Ferreira uses dance as a tool to explore communities, construction of collective identity, memory, and cultural crystallization. The performers explore this idea in a physical, intuitive and unpretentious flow of the body, dance and cultural construction. They start with familiar footwork, borrowed from clubbing, balls, as well as the studio, and use the physical vocabulary of the contemporary, social, urban context as an identity lexicon (house, kuduro, Top Rock, hardstyle, etc.). Through a slow and structured building process, they connect these styles to the heritage and memory of dances from the past.
