In 2025, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting Ménagerie de Verre for the presentation of Monstres de circonstances by Xavier Le Roy as part of Les Inaccoutumés Spring Festival 2025.
As artificial creatures in the art world, are monsters designed to instill fear? Are they based on the innermost fears of their creators? Can we trace how monsters engage with our fears? How do monsters embody the unknown? How do they represent things we fear or cannot control? What do monsters do for us, emotionally and intellectually?
Monsters may have escaped from fantasy worlds, books, movies and theater stages. Once camouflaging our fears, perhaps they have migrated to live in the world of our current confusions, now camouflaging our daily lives.
This show is derived from a lecture given at a symposium on “Stagings of Monstrous Bodies and Orders.” The monstrosities of its form and content pushed it out of the conference room to meet other audiences, other worlds beyond the academy, in an attempt to diffuse our current world.
