Marlene Monteiro Freitas's latest creation, NÔT ("night" in Cape Verdean Creole), is a grand fresco rich in subtle details, uninterrupted gestures, and shifting, captivating spaces. In every performance, the dancers and musicians enact a duel between reality and desire, love and war, grotesque and sublime, alienation and freedom. It's a flamboyant choreographic carnival where her signature style, characterized by metamorphoses, unease, and strangeness, is clearly evident.
