Before the storm

William Forsythe
En 2026, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting the Lyon Opera Ballet for the creation of Before the storm, a program presenting Actus... by Lucinda Childs, The Grey Area by David Dawson and Enemy in the Figure by William Forsythe.
Choreographers William Forsythe and David Dawson have dedicated much of their careers to pushing the boundaries of ballet. Enemy in the Figure (1989) and The Grey Area (2003), their respective abstract works for the Lyon Opera Ballet, push classical technique to its limits, with electronic scores by Thom Willems and Nielz Lanz. Both choreographers challenge the virtuosic vocabulary of the dancers, distorting its geometry and giving it a striking new freshness.
Alongside them, Lucinda Childs, a key figure in American postmodern dance, also tackles the work of ballet artists. Actus..., created as part of the serie Danse, is a solo specifically designed for a dancer in the company.
This evening, dedicated to a series of nuanced and rigorous choreographic works, is highlighted by minimalist staging in chiaroscuro, embodying the delicate balance of the Lyon Opera Ballet, between emotion, virtuosity, and commitment.
